Let's figure out how to play HEY HO by "The Lumineers" on piano.

I don't really like this "song"-- if you can call it that-- at all. It's sort of ridiculous. Whoever comes up with shouting hey and ho probably would have been better as a dock loading person or football player yelling hike! Apparently, the psychologists say we get to like anything if its repeated however. Let's begin with the original video in the following Youtube Playlist. I'll add instructive videos to the playlist as we move along, including performances by me and other students. The discussion opens in a separate window here. Poor explanation of Roman Numeral chords at least starts us off this weekend.

I think there are a lot of problems with this person's presentation but he's using new tech by IKEA apparently to demonstrate things on a piano keyboard with a whiteboard and talking head box. I'll go with this for now since I don't have the equipment. Teaching is evolving obviously toward this type of system rather than university and college classes packed with chairs and textbooks. Home schooling is on the increase. The internet might just be starting-- if humanity can keep civilization on track-- which is questionable. Anyway, here's a 7 min. intro to Roman Numerals in music which we deliver EARLY in the lessons... as soon as possible after the introduction of scales.

"Happy" by Ferrel Williams --> piano/vocal cover by Rick Potvin & more

The following playlist starts with two videos- the original Happy by Ferrel Williams around 2008 then my piano/vocal cover. In coming days, I'll add the piano and piano/vocal covers done by others on Youtube, or by our own students or additional versions by me or Dorothy. The entire playlist, if played automatically, will enculture the listener to the various aspects of the song in various ways preparing that listener to play it on the keyboard instrument of their choice. Video ads can be filtered out if the FIREFOX browser is used, I believe. I use and edition of SAFARI that can't do that. After the embedded playlist below, there is a link to a discussion thread in a forum where I look at various issues like chord changes, the lyrics and so on.

Piano vocal covers & lesson for Hey Soul Sister by Rick Potvin / Dorothy Motto

An unbelievable 63 million hits on Youtube have accumulaed for this "golden oldie of current tunes" from 2008. I personally don't understand it but I'll just go with it for the heck of it. The ukelele has apparently been hip in pop for four years. Who knew? Not me, that's for sure. I saw uke class at Sam Ash 6 months ago and was amused. How could that be? Weird but true.
