Bumble Boogie - Dorothy - Jan. 2014

Hit the Road Jack - Rick in January 2014.

Here's the car Dorothy and me "hit the road" in when we did gigs in 2014. By 2014, I think we were doing retirement homes in the Phoenix area. George and Sons gig had ended. The Taurus was on it's 2nd engine. The transmission fluid had not been changed at 95,000 miles. I was unaware of the neccessity of changing tranny fluid. Stupid stupid stupid me. This car was amazing while it lasted-- 3.8 L which was BIGGER than the other 3.0 L... plush velvet seats, great stereo-- and lots of room made me feel like a real man on the freeways of Phoenix despite the car being 20 years old. Amazing. But I apparently didn't understand the finer technical service requirements and deterioration schedule. It sits parked in my driveway now awaiting a windfall profit scenario in which I can "reanimate" it. In the meantime, I start it up every day and listen to 93.5 for the song that tells me what it's thinking. Yeah-- right I know-- that's nuts. But it acknowledges the idea that that car MIGHT be "alive".... like "Christine", the car in the horror movie-- but in a positive spiritual sense.

Margueritaville on piano-only with vocoder

We have an upcoming gig on piano only-- with perhaps keyboard drums on the side and vocoder so I thought I'd try a few tunes using that format. It requires I play in the key I sing so no auto transpose possible. This one's in D. My hair is better since I found an extra bottle of Chinese shampoo. I still have that cowlick on the right side but sometimes a curler takes care of it. I'm thinking about a laser brush-- but not until my car transmission repair bill is paid off. So here's Marguaritaville.

Desperado cover by Rick in studio - using extreme vocoder as test

This is a version of Desperado (Eagles) using bass in the left hand split piano keyboard on the Casio Privia. I didn't transpose down as I would normally because I'm testing to see what I would do if I had to play in the key my music is in-- F. The vocoder (BOSS) is set at 16 with a hard electronic pitch correction engaged for fun to see what it sounds like. I'm wired directly from the primitive mixer on the amp to the stereo input on the camera-- with the piano off and the speaker off-- all sound coming only through my moniter headphones. My hair is limp because I haven't using my Chinese shampoo lately, having run out. I never let bad hair days stop me from posting however. My teeth don't show up too well but they're still fairly okay though the enamel is thinning and gums are beginning to recede. On with the show.

Right Here Waiting ...Rick in studio

Here I used the Galaxy piano #011 voice on the Yamaha 433 keyboard, along with #16 on the Boss voice processor with a "hard" pitch correct and layering effect turned on. The connection from the mixer/amp is through the headphone jack into a tenuous connection into the stero mic input on the camera which is propped up on the amp tenuously. My particular arrangement is likely inaccurate but for the purpose of the demo, it's good enough for today. I haven't used my favorite shampoo from China on my hair so it's a bit scraggly-- having used some American stuff that doesn't work nearly as well.

Imagine

Rick's "Last Date" by Floyd Cramer on the Yamaha 433 keyboard.

We're creating an option to play ONLY the keyboard at a few upcoming gigs. I'll take the keyboard, an amp (on a dolly this time) and the Boss pitch corrector as well as the old Canon camera. Given that we'll zero in on this option, I'm creating some examples of what it will look and sound like. Every place we play also have some kind of acoustic grand piano, usually a little out of tune and hard to play but we'll likely do straight acoustic piano or a combination of the acoustic and a keyboard.  PIANO LESSONS:  A lot of our students only have keyboards now-- not pianos -- so this series of videos will  offer good examples of how these keyboards can be used to create authentic sounding bands and how students can learn piano and sing using them as well. Here's Last Date on a keyboard.

A bird called 'donald trump... donald trump' in my back yard.

I couldn't believe my ears when I first heard the bird calling from my backyard.... 'donald trump... donald trump!". It was the day before Trump was to visit Arizona. I grabbed my handicam-- and ran to the backyard to try to catch a piece of this call and I managed to get about 6 seconds of it before it disappeared into the background noise of the day and other birds and traffic. So I grabbed that 6 seconds and repeated it on a loop about 8 times. See if you do not agree with me that the bird is callind 'donald trump!" "donald trump"!

All I want for Christmas is... a 10 Gallon Stetson Hat (Rick on piano)

Here's an original song by a customer we recorded in a studio track by track, edited by a studio tech on a computer. I played the piano.  Audio only.  For visual relief I installed the lesson book on chords.

Country Roads

I'm not too happy with the results in this next song, Country Roads, but I'll post this interim result anyway. BE CAREFUL WITH VOLUME-- turn it way down because my recording level is too HIGH... I still have some learnin' to do on how to make that go right.

Go Johnny Go

Piano player and singer at Burlington's La Salle retirement residence.

Note that the couple are doing Girl from Ipanema... perfect! I know that one!  I think that that 's a digital grand with the backgrounds electronically built in. Both have mics. They'd have to be local for this one shot deal but a place like this with a piano could mean ongoing business.

Hey Jude

I'm running videos on this blog from vidmeup.com now instead of youtube so it may or may not appear in your browser. I don't know what the translation problems are and I'm not likely going to bother figuring it out. Youtube won't take uploads from me anymore because I think my browser is "out of date". That's funny because they didn't have any problem taking them before six months ago. Now all of a sudden they can't take them. I'm not interested in upgrading browsers or very much of anything lately. That goes for my music so herewith is Hey Jude from the 1960's.  I'm not really hitting the nail on the head here but I figure it to be an attempt-- an experiment. I think the vocal isn't balanced with the instrumental. And I made few booboos. Anyway... I'll have to give this a shot in public next Saturday night at Habachi Grille.

Old Time Rock & Roll

I continue to experiment with a direct line input from the amp/speaker/mixer combo unit into the camera. This time Old Time Rock and Roll is the topic. We'll have to use ONLY the keyboard at Habachi which has it's own keyboard but a lesser quality. The Yamaha below has subtractable parts so you'll hear me operate those to some extent.

Monday, June 13

Surfin USA for Habachi Grille with direct input-- use stereo headphones.

We're working to put a new set together for Habachi Grille for 2 hours on Saturday nights... and this can be used at our upcoming Chengdu Delight gig and retirement center gigs as well. I've changed my recording tactics to direct input-- which is a big deal in terms of sound quality. It involves lots of wires. I hate that. But it is what it is. I always try to put a systematic routine together that can be used across various types of venues-- be it online, or in front of retireess or at restaurants on lousy grand pianos or on our keyboard & digital piano *which is heavy. Anyway... give this one a listen-- an old tune from the sixties... still known by the youngin's out there who sport backward baseball caps, tattoos and piercings. Go figure. Beach boys-- Surfin USA

Sunday, June 12

Recording test with Boardwalk-- direct input from mixer/amp/speaker combo unit via headphone jack

I had to switch my old Canon ZR-40 (my 3rd one since the others bit the dust)... from direct input to headphone input since those outputs use different "impedences". I then plugged my speaker/amp/mixer headphone output into the input on the camera for a direct hardwired input which I think sounds better.

Tuesday, June 7

Direct input of mic1 and mono-piano-line into Canon vidcam-- TEST

Here's a short test of a direct input into my camera with two lines-- into the stereo plug but with mono results- evenly split-- with piano and mic.

60 minutes of local traffic set to Cowboy Strut & Puttin on the Ritz

An hour of traffic was compressed into 6 minutes in the following video. I'm not sure if it's interesting or not.

Mexican Hat Dance Accompaniment for San Jose Anti-Trump Riots

It occurred to me, while watching some of the riots in San Jose yesterday, that what was missing was MUSIC! I'm not very good at dubbing but if you play the 3 minute clips below at the same time, you'll get an idea of what I had in mind. Maybe someone better at video creation can take it further. Both video's will play for about 3 minutes so start them both and sit back and enjoy! I'm not sure what feeling the juxtaposition imposes but it's kind of funny in a way-- certainly interesting!

Obama stuttering songs

In keeping with my idea of reviewing songs inspired by current events, using the playlist function of Youtube, I now present Bee-Bi-Obama-bama-bama who made us all laugh yesterday with his Trump-breakdown inspired stutter which I found hill-lairrrrious. I couldn't stop laughing for 10 minutes. I follow up the snippet of the stutter with stuttering songs or near-stuttering wordgame songs such as bbb-b-b-b-Bad to the Bone and the NAME Game. If I think of more I'll add them after this writing.

The Magilla Gorilla & Harambe Hoax Show - both cartoons

Here's another one my playlists featuring SONGS that can be associated with CURRENT EVENTS. In this one, I recall a THEME SONG from the CARTOON about Magilla Gorilla. The tune is done in a BIG BAND STYLE accompanied by singers and a full orchestra. It's the kind of TV OPENING that used to be popular in the last century-- and I would say the quality of those musical openings were better than today's. Here are more...Hanna-Barbera Productions - Television Series (1960s) - Part 1 - YouTube The MODERN FORM of the CARTOON is VIDEO-CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). As a modern cartoon, CGI looks real-- unless you look closer. Today's "news" orgs are so confident that most of us DO NOT look closely, that they feature CARTOONS as "news". I have to admit that the quality of these latest cgi cartoons along with the fake news is entertaining. The only thing missing is the THEME SONG-- that's where I thought I would do my part and add to the entertainment.

LYRICS - I could not find chords yet... but here's a site with a TV Fake book that includes this song. I might get that. http://www.ezplaymusic.com/browseproducts/Fake-BookThe-TV-Fake-Book.HTML
I recall the lyrics as "Magilla Gorilla and all of his friends say hello, hello, hello..." but cannot find THOSE lyrics. Apparently that's the closing theme.

We came on the earlier side for dinner, so the place wasn't quite busy.  Needless to say, we had the server's undivided attention the entire time.  We sat right by the piano so it was very neat to hear the live pianist play while we ate. We ordered about 9 dishes, and the memorable ones that I really liked included the: garlic and onion crab, fried crab, tofu clay pot and the steamed fish.

I ate at Golden Buddha a few weeks ago.  We ate at the restaurant after a day at the zoo with our 4 year old and had a blast.  The piano bar played tunes for my daughter and the staff was more than accommodating.

We stepped in and asked for a seat for two. We were seated immediately. The place was decorated nicely and a lady playing the piano made for great ambiance.

Service is pleasant and friendly.  Cost is reasonable.   Ambiance is nice.  There is a baby grand piano, but only played at night for dinner.  It is comparable to California standards.  Good ROA (ratio of authenticity)

A gem for Chinese food when you're in Phoenix, man. It's authentic and even offers entertainment each and every evening: live piano! Yes, there's an American guy who plays from a book of songs each night. Feel free to tip him if you'd like; he plays well!

Oh but this place is classy; it has a piano, and a 24 hour player!

Be entertained by classic, quiet standards being played live on a piano while you dine?

When we left, the same manager was at the piano singing in Chinese

Chengdu Delight Restaurant in Chandler has a piano on stage.

The piano broke while we tried it on our first visit. It seems the sostenuto went out- that is the left hand sustain on the bottom end controlled by the middle peddle. I only had the soft pedal depressed and the right pedal, which is sustain. I recall this same problem (and our repair of it, waiting for the piano tuner several times) during 2005 and 2006 when we played it for owner Tony Kao. We visited a second time the following week and it wasn't repaired yet. The current manager had not yet called the tuner. I had offered to call him. I might end up paying for the repair as we make our offer to play it again.

LEE HUFF on the stage with the piano facing outward is just a bit dangerous since there is nothing but a 3 foot drop immediately behind him. When I played this piano, it faced the other way with the keys toward the wall-- much safer.

the hostess was very and offered me a free cold bottled soda while I waited for the to-go food to be prepared. We ordered wonton soup, cumin lamb, yanzi chicken and a veggie. All were excellent. Especially loved the cumin lamb. The portions were big. The service was superb. There was live piano music. Lovely place. Will go there again.

Stopped by for a late lunch for the first time today since I was famished from a long work day. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.
The place was huge, clean and nicely furnished with a grand piano for entertainment. Albeit it was empty since it was after 2pm on a weekday, the hostess was very and offered me a free cold bottled soda while I waited for the to-go food to be prepared. The Mongolian beef with fried rice was tasty and if I lived closer, I would definitely have be back to try their varied different dishes.

Penguins vs. Sharks goals accompanied by ONE CHORD on the stadium organ?

I don't understand what the organist is doing upon the goals shot during the latest Stanley Cup game between Penguins and Sarks. It sounds like just one chord. I'll have to check it out further because I know some stadium organists peronally and know their equipment. What I'm hearing is really watered down from what should be. Check it out.

Pierre Trudeau mispronounced "unPREcedented"... as "unPREEcedented"

When you are a musician as I am, you hear language differently. You hear the composition of the cadance, the rhythm and the pronunciation. Here Trudeau exposes himself as a mere reader who doesn't understand English and thus English reasoning when he says "un preeeee cedented". Other than that, a very good command of English pronunciation. I just can't understand how he could have made that error of making the short E and long E. I completely missed that back when this was live.

Rick creates Glockenspiel rendition of Lollipop Song for Ice Cream Truck in Phoenix

I'm working out a Glockenspiel version of Lollipop for a local ice cream truck. I'll put several renditions on the following playlist -- along with ice cream trucks as examples of how ice cream truck songs are supposed to sound-- then add mine below this on the Blogger video host because Youtube can't accept any more videos from me using my current browser and I can't update my browser without updating my computer & I don't want to do that presently.

Playlist begins with Chordettes and moves through several versions including piano

I may as well take the time to create a piano lesson out of this song... here are the searches.... and below that some lyrics and chords and more.  Once the ice cream truck hits the streets, maybe I'll videotape it and post it here after buying my own ice cream with my rendition of Lollipop playing in the background.

The Ice Cream Truck Song - YouTube

What mechanism is involved in playing ice cream truck bellular sounds-- and why was that sound chosen? ... good question. I added a video to the playlist above to answer that.

Here's a first attempt to create Lollipop as an ice cream truck song. I didn't use sheet music but did use the chords as seen above. I think I have a lot of inaccuracies and might have to order the sheet music. I forgot to edit out my first few false starts. I replicated it 5X with copy and paste. I do not believe the end user is going to be able to play this off his smart phone through a loudspeaker as ice cream trucks use. The proper equipment is sol by a particular company as seen in the video playlist above. In any case, playing the following will give us basic idea of what we're considering. I believe I used some tones that are too low.

Happy birthday to me!

We do the New Orleans Mardi Gras set-- for retirement residences.

Dorothy has a piano style that can replicate the sound of Mardi Gras. It's all in the stride on the left hand.

Rick adds a keyboard background of percussion, bass, and trumpets to complete the effect.

Blue Suede Shoes covered by Rick as part of audience participation at retirement residence

Dorothy and I have been inviting more and more audience participation in our concerts at retirement centers lately. Sometimes, we've gone overboard but more often than not, in the past at least, there has been too little. The Duelling Piano business does nothing other than audience participation which is too much. We do a mix of show & audience involvement on little bits of songs-- since the old fashioned singalong doesn't go over well these days. In the following song, we invite the audience to sing the "blue blue blue suede shoes" line at the end of the song.

VOLUME WARNING - The following test video was made with input volume too high

Turn down your amp before playing this video-- or reduce the volume on the bar on the video by more than half-- it's too loud. This is a test video only.

Atonal music

Be sure to check under ATONAL music in the index below anytime you wish to hear music that makes no sense. This type of music is great for those with no sense of harmony, melody or rhythm. They can be expressive and sound like they're doing something right away.

Rick & Dorothy do Neil Diamond cover - Sweet Caroline

Test - did blogger stop me from uploading pictures & video?

Testing... It may be that blogger won't allow my current browser to work here anymore.

Dorothy Motto vocal swing set May 2016

Dorothy Motto Latin piano + percussion May 2016

These latest videos are not on Youtube proper-- as such-- but uploaded on the Blogger site here. Because of that, I cannot link the videos in a playlist as I could on Youtube. It appears now that Youtube won't allow me to upload with my old Mac OSX 10.4 and Safari 4.1-- but to update my browser I need a new operating system. To do THAT, I need a new computer because I'm on a Mac G4 and the most I can run on is 10.4 (Tiger). So I'm done with Youtube uploads until I get a new computer it seems. In the meantime, I can continue to upload one video at a time here. I've tried other video hosts like VIMEO but they insist on using HD and don't have playlist linking anyway. There is another service that allows playlists but they charge $10/mo and I don't want to do that right now. So here's the best video I can make and upload at this time (using an old Canon video camera).

Dorothy's Latin Medley & Rick's Pianoman -- April 26, 2016

Did Romper Room prepare BabyBoomGenernation for SmartTV watching us?

No more youtubes for me-- VidMeUp might work better.

I'm not signing or renewing any more URL's or domain names. The domain name industry has been destroyed in my view. I'll never use twitter or facebook again either-- they're useless. I'm very unhappy with google and even blogger for different reasons. My MacG4 is way out of date, my browser constantly is indicated as being out of date. I'm just really unhappy with the entire Mac experience now. It's all useless... pointless. They've all destroyed themselves. I'm now getting zero hits on this blog due to my non-renewal of my domain-- nothing is re-routed or forwarded. Here's my first upload to VidMeUp... a possible alternative... lets see if the embed works.

Rick's Popcorn Playlist for Sun. April 25, 2016

A "popcorn playlist" is a Youtube playlist that features a wide variety of videos selected by one editor, in this case, me-- Rick Potvin.  I call it a popcorn playlist because it's suitable for sitting back to watch while eating popcorn-- much like a movie in a theatre or home. It's an alternative to those things.

Of course, the movie can be advanced by skipping over certain videos on the playlist by clicking the advance arrow. Or a selected video can be seen by using the drop down menu. Neither of those can be done with a remote control yet but Rick invites the TV industry to study his idea for upgrades to that this can be done.

Rick's popcorn playlist is not intended for viewers who are walking around with video-enabled smartphones. It is possible however to watch an internet enabled ipad propped up at the foot of the bed before sleeping. In fact, Rick includes late night Coast to Coast talk shows by Noori and Bell about ancient aliens at the end of the popcorn playlist for the viewer's late night listening experience. Another term for this method might be "video deejay".
