Piano Guy Scott Houston has a successful approach to learning piano but...

...but there are elements he leaves out that I think beginners can fully comprehend. He has over-simplified things to the point where his course is a bit mind-numbing... but of course, that's my opionion viewing it as an expert. He's on youtube and I'm not... to borrow Chevy Chase's phrase. Let's explore Scott Houston's site at this thread where you can join me, posting with approval.. [+]

Learn Little Brown Jug through Youtube viewing.

I'm going to attempt the impossible here... teaching piano lessons for free for now, using online Youtube videos and not even playing the piano... rather watching the piano and other instruments being played. As I pointed out-- this might seem like an impossible way to learn to play the piano however... I believe I have some elements here that are going to revolutionize the method by which we attempt to teach piano. So... view the videos for little Brown Jug here...[+]

Online piano lessons present a myriad of problems not yet solved.

I still do not believe online lessons work very well. There are particular features of lessons-- of explaining how music works-- that are not dealt with on any online lesson sites I've seen. The idea of the integrated approach is not done anywhere I've seen... even in print. I'll look forward to developing a semblance of what I think would work here in this blog over coming months.

Micheal Buble's "I Haven't Met You Yet" struck me as odd, but here it is.

Larouche warns against Stravinsky's music... I'm not entirely sure why-- but I've done a cursory search on the problem and I've made a suggested listening link here as well... which I have the music for and which I'll attempt to play at the restaurant tonight. More... with links... [+]

GOPIANO.com free online lessons look promising.

Here's page 1 of the GOPiano.com series that allows you to get started on the basics right away. I'm not sure how young ages would handle this but I'm confident that the average 8 year old should be able to. Certainly teens, and onward through adulthood should. I'm very interested in older people's learning skills too but there are new elements involved in later years that I'll add along the way... such as food supplements to keep the brain quick and agile... The younger person has less problem with memory and speed but more challenge with discipline, stick-to-it-iveness... and focus.

Here's page on of the GoPiano.com series... [+]

Absolute beginners ages 6-106 start here.

The only way to begin piano lessons is to begin listing and listening to music you enjoy. There is, in fact, no such thing as a "piano lesson". What we do in a piano lesson, as it's called, is create music. But what music do you want to create? This is the first element to deal with. The piano is merely a means of recreation of the music. There is plenty of opportunity to view and listen to preferred music given the internet now-- MIDI files, MP3 and Youtube all come in handy.

Here are a few to begin with...

[+] Lyrics and Music
Alphabet Song

Lyrics and Music
A Tisket, A Tasket

Lyrics and Music
Ants Go Marching In

There is really no point in trying to learn to play more sophisticated material until you learn to play these basic nursery rhymes. The same theory applies so why not begin at the beginning?  Here is the sheet music for the above tunes...

Alphabet Song
http://www.kididdles.com/pdf/alphabetsongsheetmusic.pdf

A Tisket, A Tasket
Ella Fitzgerald - A-Tisket, a-Tasket Sheet Music (Digital Download)

The Ants Go Marching In (When Johnny Comes Marching Home)
Free sheet music : Gilmore, Patrick - When Johnny Comes Marching Home (Piano solo)

You can instantly see that the playing of these tunes is no small matter because the notation is substantially involved. This isn't to say you can't sing or play these by memory or by ear. Of course you can. The point is that to learn to "play the piano", you'll have to understand that notation as well-- otherwise, you'll end up at a dead end, limited by what you can recall, note by note. That's not much of a piano playing hobby.

YouTube offers some pretty wild possibilities for self-education that were not possible a few years ago. I'd like to offer piano learners the opportunity to use these tools. For example, here are the same three children's tunes given my YouTube search...  selections that are perfectly appropriate for absolute beginners as well... by virtue of the fact that a piano student absolutely must listen and explore and enjoy...

The Alphabet Song (originally Mozart's 12 variations on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) on a Youtube Music Reading Video... (don't worry if you can't follow along as it's played... however if you CAN, it's a lot of fun.. and helps you learn to play it.)
YouTube - Mozart: 12 Variations "Ah, vous dirai-je, maman" KV 265 (Clara Haskil)

A Tisket A Tasket is actually a sophisticated jazz tune made famous by Ella Fitzgerald... so what you think is an elementary childish tune, often is no such thing.
YouTube - Ella Fitzgerald - A-Tisket, A-Tasket

Here's a cartoon version of The Ants...
YouTube - THE ANTS GO MARCHING

... and a child plays the original titled version on a keyboard
YouTube - When Johnny Comes Marching Home on the Piano

...finally, the original version set to a video of the Civil War where the song originated...
YouTube - When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again / Gettysburg Scenes

It's pretty startling to witness realistic war scenes like that... but its how the American Republic was won against the onslaught of the British Empire... an onslaught that continues today in monetary warfare... but to end this article... listen to Oscar Peterson's jazz group handle A Tisket A Tasket...

I can find the best sites for you to visit if you're interested. YouTube - Jim Brickman - Joyful

Be sure to check into my Etcetera Blog to read my latest public observations on the world-at-large-- especially the crashing financial economy.... through the eyes of PHYSICAL economist and Classical Humanist Lyndon Larouche-- who has the ANSWER to the worldwide crisis we face... namely FDR Bretton Woods (fixed exchange rates), Glass Steagall (separate investment and chartered banks), and a 3rd National Bank (replace the FED). Laugh all you want-- the REAL economists are NOT dismissing Larouche at all.

This week, we'll look at The Music Man.

For those of you attending our home studio lesson program, Dorothy Motto will be instructing you this coming week and weekend on the broadway play / movie entitled "The Music Man".  Since we now have her Technics organ set up beside the piano you'll use... it'll be fun for you to play your songs with her accompaniment. Now THAT is a piano lesson! You become part of her ensemble... just like the pros! I'll update this page in coming days with Music Man links I recommend you view.

Be sure to explore the rest of my index just below... there are plenty of interesting angles I've provided for piano students to enter the world of piano playing. You'll surely find something that interests you. Over the next few months, I'll be organizing the posts in a more logical way for an online student to start with the easy stuff and proceed to the more complex. For now, it's random access because I'm only getting back into the work of an online (unpaid) course. It's a labour of love for now.

HORSE WITH NO NAME
A favorite old rock tune from 1972, A Horse with No Name, by Neil Young-- uses just 2 chords. We'll transpose it to various keys using the roman numbers technique. Use "single note bass chords" to generate a complete sounding harmony.

A faster way to get started on creating chords on the piano that sounds good right away is to use a single note for whatever chord you want in the left hand. Of course, you'll need the chord above the staff... so you'll need to be careful not to purchase or use printed music scores that do not have that addition. If you're stuck with a piece with no chords, simply follow the lowest note in the bass line as your guide. It won't always represent the chord, but it will more than likely represent a note that belongs to the chord... which will be good enough.

You'll be applying Dorothy's own arrangments of left hand patterns to each of the songs... so we look forward to delivering this to you so you can add it to your repertoire.

ETCETERA - 1973 OIL PRICE HOAX
This morning, I looked at the historical event which is still affecting us today... and which is getting worse... in it's effect.. the 1973 so-called "Energy Crisis" or the "oil price crisis". Significance of Mozart is higher than normally considered.

Here's a quote from Larouche on Mozart... with the pieces he's referring to...

Art & Science
Compare this with a comparable challenge from the domain of Classical musical composition. Take, as a sample, two specially related compositions of W.A. Mozart: first, his "Ave Verum Corpus," which was a relatively very late work in his life-time, a composition which is to be compared with his important, earlier song, "Abendempfindung."

Broadway play CD and lesson book-- My Fair Lady

This week, we'll be looking at the 1963 broadway play My Fair Lady based on Pygmalion by that playright George Bernard Shaw... for which there is a theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake where I attended a few plays travelling to and from on bicycle in my teens, from Niagara Falls. Anyway, enough about me. On with the show...I've put together my own Youtube playlist-- learning a few painful programming lessons along the way... and I can now present you with the lesson plan...

1. Listen to the playlist.
2. Get my booklet.
3. Learn the songs by singing and listening.
4. Learn to play them.
5. Write your own musical play and have it performed by a cast of actors in the theatre of your choice. Grade will be assigned based on New York Times reviews. Just kidding. But... maybe it's not such a bad idea anyway. What do you think?

Here's the playlist.. get started.. and have fun.

Homework links... listen, read and watch... Schiller, Rachmaninoff and more

Homework time... you have to view these if you're going to take lessons from me on the piano.. .some of them are directly related, some are not. If you're part of my high school extracurricular program... you're expected to go through all of them... younger students.. can take a few of them.

Elementary fingering

First of all, you will need to think of each finger (and your thumb) as numbered from one through five. Your thumb is "finger 1" and your pointer is "2" and so on. Of course, your left hand will begin with the thumb as "1" as well. Here is a diagram of your right hand with the finger numbers. See if you can count your own fingers like this right now...

Next, use the fingers of your hand to play 5 notes in a row. Those notes do NOT have to start with C. You can start on ANY note. For example, the following diagram shows the five notes you will play begin with D.

When you play the notes, make sure that your fingers are curved as follows... because it's important than each key be struck with the same amount of pressure. Only when your fingers are curved can you control your finger muscles properly to control how loud or soft the note will be. Learning to do this early is important. Notice in the picture below that the hand is holding tennis ball. By imagining your hand holding a tennis ball as you play, you will have the proper curve on your fingers.

Suggested viewing-- experimental learning / instruction process continues

This blog is only a prototype... of something I have a vague idea of... in other words, I'm not sure where I'm going with it... but I have elements such as... my recommendation to "students" to view these sites and videos I've picked out for you this afternoon... they're all rated ok for kids... and any adults too..

Basically, be prepared to consider a few of these with seriousness after you've enjoyed them... in particular, I have the music for The Swan... intermediate level... but I still need the chords and chord analysis for the very funny presentation of Up Up and Away... you can find them and post them here... As far as Weird Al goes... consider his articulate and very legible lyrics... and we'll talk about how high a rating he gets and why... finanally the collaborative piano blog from the RCM where I attended school for a time... is worth looking at.

Lessons are basically conversations of growth... where there is an exchange... I'd say about 80/20  in favor of my giving new ideas to the student-- that's why they're the student.. but the feedback I take (the 20%) is required for me to "hear" what that student wants... and to use it for my own growth... Read Grow or Die... to learn more about that... google it yourself... the Future of Education is online... like this I think... and this is still developing. If you are in high school and require extracurricular piano classes, give me a hoot.. at rick_potvin@yahoo.com...

PIANO METHOD BOOKS vary in reading skill level
As a piano teacher, I'm in the process of categorizing the method books I have in my vast collection so that any particular student can be assigned a book with an appropriate reading level and a concommitant playing level. It's quite possible, for example, to have a student who has high reading skills but low playing skills. The reverse, good playing skills already develeoped but poor reading comprehension calls for a different type of book. Method books to piano students are as critical as nutrient and medicine to medical patients-- just the right type of medicine at the right dose is key. It's my job to figure out that particular match. [More...

Oil Rig weblog

oil rig - mass media blackout

"illusion" "gulf of mexico" - Google Search

Another aspect to what I was directly told is that BP, Haliburton, and other co-conspirators drilled intentionally into the 'mid side' of this particular asphalt volcano. Basically from what I understand, it is a soda bottle effect. If they had drilled into the top of the volcano, then all the gas would rise out, and explode as would bottled carbonated liquid. The effect of drilling into the side permits a safely controlled release of gas, tar, liquified asphalt, and other related gases. What was done is a more or less controlled release; almost natural in fact!

Another aspect to what I was directly told is that BP, Haliburton, and other co-conspirators drilled intentionally into the 'mid side' of this particular asphalt volcano.

The Asphalt volcano was a win win situation for this false flag: as it presented the best illusion to all outside parties. Not only do the conspirators need to fool the general public, but also the oil industry, and scientific community. The public is easy to fool, but the latter two groups take a little more effort; this is the main reason why the Gulf is being isolated by security contractors, and military.

We've all seen the videos of beaches not lined so much with oil, but with tar balls of varying sizes. Also, we've all noticed BP's overall lack of concern for cleanup. We've seen booms which aren't tied together. We've heard first hand account of staged clean ups on the beaches. As soon as a press conference, or media event is done BP stops work. The reason is simple, it's not that they don't care, but that they already know what's gonna happen. The oil will start naturally being cleaned up via decomposition, oil eating organisms, and falling to the already naturally tar covered bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.

FIRST FLYOVER I"VE SEEN!!!!

So why are we witnessing such fundamental changes? Well, the globalism and "free trade" that our politicians and business leaders insisted would be so good for us have had some rather nasty side effects. It turns out that they didn't tell us that the "global economy" would mean that middle class American workers would eventually have to directly compete for jobs with people on the other side of the world where there is no minimum wage and very few regulations. The big global corporations have greatly benefited by exploiting third world labor pools over the last several decades, but middle class American workers have increasingly found things to be very tough.

>>>bigger picture--??? tariffs... protectionism... Alexander Hamilton...

Mentally, people seem to be losing the ability to think clearly, sanely, positively on any topic you wish to name. The rate of memory loss and higher cerebration malfunction are of epidemic proportions, and affecting people of younger and younger age groups. It seems that what we as a Race learned over tedious centuries in order to claim Rights of harmonious existence is being abandoned in a race to become more and more greedy, cruel, and maleficent.

Today, armed drug cartels openly challenge the Mexican government. Deadly battles occur frequently in Mexico, where more than 6,500 people were killed by cartel forces last year and more than 5,000 have been killed so far this year. Paramilitary bands have entered the United States illegally and set up sentry and command posts.

A flurry of propaganda has surfaced over the past 48 hours, indicating that, in the aftermath of the Obama-Netanyahu White House love-fest last week, the Obama Administration is seriously considering military action against Iran. If it were simply a matter of media black propaganda, the threat would be limited, at best, given U.S. military resistance to another Persian Gulf war.

That is the question asked by one Michael Snyder, the editor of a blog called "The Economic Collapse." Snyder, in a column posted last night, reports that a billboard in Stockton, California, is perfectly clear on that question: "Welcome to the 2nd most dangerous city in California.

Forget all the malarkey you are hearing and reading about "regulation" and "financial reform"—good, bad, or indifferent. Referring to the dialogue he held with leading U.S. economists, and representatives of China, Russia, and India on April 29, LaRouche declared that what he outlined in that event formed the basis of a program, which would kick in immediately upon the Constitutional removal of President Obama from office. Once that is accomplished, LaRouche stated, 'I would play a key role in a post-Obama government, not as a member of the government, but as an advisor with many connections, pulling many strings together, to advise on how we bring the world out of the present mess.'

Larouche's thesis is that The City of London is the home base for the international financial cartel that seeks to destroy the nation-state in favor of a depopulated world under it's own control. BP is British Petroleum-- and every step of this oil rig disaster can be shown to be anticipated and planned. The continuing spewing of bigger amounts of oil every day is like an ongoing 9/11 ... which was also a British central bank led attack. More on this here.. [+] Larouche [+]

It's never too late to start.

I'm often asked if it's too late to start to play the piano. Hey-- I think if it's past your bedtime, it's too late. Otherwise, 7 - 9 pm is fine.

See  the Table of Contents below-- and click on Piano topics... for my latest piano playing related ideas... in forum format. I've created a unique system of online presence here that can be applied to anything... and that, in a most powerful way.

PIano lessons should include nuclear power.

If nuclear power is required for the continuance of civilization, and if piano lessons are part of civilization, then shouldn't nuclear power be part of a piano lesson? It's an interesting thought.

Can IPad be used for piano music?

I'll be looking at the IPad today to see if it can be used to display music easily.

HABITS ARE AN ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT FOR PIANO PLAYING. I find that being interested in a new piano topic is essential for playing piano. The more you know about translating all kinds of music to piano music, the greater the possibilities are for shaping habits that lead to playing. See the link below for the piano forum for more...

LEARN TO PLAY A FEW MEASURES OF FAMOUS BIG PIECES.  It always seemed useless to me to learn to play pieces that nobody knows. Instead, its more instructive and fun to play a few measures of pieces that are well known even if they're fairly complex.

[+] Well head area cracking up now-- June 21, 2010-- oil volcano increasing to 200,000 barrels a day-- disproves Peak Oil Theory-- and will destroy Atlantic Ocean.... IF it's not stopped with PNE (Powerful Nuclear Explosive). Obama Admin is finished. Suggestion for Piano Students-- Study nuclear explosives-- and heat-- as a tool. This event "changes everything". Obama promised "Change"-- well... in a way... that's exactly what's going to occur based on this event... except not in the way Obama had understood. The best source for TOP INTEL on this event is from Larouche.... study Larouche for true economics and science.

There would be no violation of the nuclear test ban treaty, since it covers only above ground tests. Underground tests ended voluntarily in 1992, mostly because they were too expensive, not because of some high minded ideal. ...http://seekingalpha.com/tag/long-ideas

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the documents of ratification for a nuclear test ban treaty with Britain and the Soviet Union. [+

From the fifties to the seventies, the US conducted hundreds of underground tests, which involved drilling a six foot wide hole 1,000 feet deep, filling it with concrete, and then pushing a big red button. To my knowledge, radiation leaked to the surface in only one case, when a bomb was set off near an unmapped geological fault, frying two ranchers. The explosion would create a cavern deep under the surface which would be sealed by the 400 million degree temperatures these weapons create, containing the radiation. I remember walking around some old above ground sites, and the sand had been turned to colorful glass. There would be no violation of the nuclear test ban treaty, since it covers only above ground tests. Underground tests ended voluntarily in 1992, mostly because they were too expensive, not because of some high minded ideal. All of BP’s efforts to date have really been “Hail Mary’s” doomed to failure. The only real chance is to relieve the pressure by drilling several adjacent wells, and that will take months. If BP has discovered the mother of all fields with pressures so enormous, they can’t be controlled with modern technology, a possibility which some geologists admit, then more huge leaks will spring and the nuclear option will be the only one left. In the meantime, if a serious hurricane hits the region, a mathematical probability, then we will see the environmental equivalent of Chernobyl meets Katrina. In this scenario, you can kiss BP goodbye. http://seekingalpha.com/article/208389-is-bp-becoming-a-value-play

Conclusion-- Looks to me as if Larouche is missing the point about the ban on nuclear testing-- which only applies above ground. Still, it might apply to all tests even below ground and the bloggers are not correct. In any case, the details of how underground tests were done.. and the shape charge and size of the exposion needs to be looked at. This will have to be an effort agreed upon internationally. I haven't seek peak oil hoaxers being ridiculed yet-- nor have I seen other supporters of a US oil independence movement come out and point to this as an example of the size of deposits. Larouche isn't fully decided on whether oil is abiotic or not... the Russians don't think it is... there's something else going on. This accident might expose the entire oil industry as perpetrators of the biggest hoax since the Apollo moon landing-- that there is a limited supply of oil. This doesn't mean we're going to use more oil... because the power density isn't good enough anymore--

Fri, June 18, 2010. PIANO LESSONS SHOULD INVOLVE LISTENING. With today's recorded music available everywhere, every piano lesson should entail listening to something being played above the level of skill of the student.

PIANO LESSONS
(((Why do some songs lend themselves to improvisation more easily than others?))) Th. June 16, 2010.  I've been curious why certain songs can be more fun to improvise on than others. I obviously has to do with chord changes-- but what is it about frequency or kind of chord change that makes it easier and more fun to make a new melody for? I don't know the answer to that.

BP DISASTER
Oil rig Deepwater Horizon leak. Obama's talk from the Oval Office was frivolous. The main thing right now is to stop that oil volcano. Only a nuke will do it.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATES
Financial collapse. We need a global Glass Steagall then fixed exchange rates. See Larouche.

((( TUNE YOUR PIANO TO A=432 ))) Wed., June 15, 2010.  It turns out that it was the Nazi Josef Geobbels who worked for Hitler who set the new international standard at A=440. Previous to the Nazis, who were the creation of the British, A was lower... around 432. The question becomes--- Do you want Hitler's tuning, or Bach's? [More...]

(((PARTIAL READING MAKES SIGHTREADING EASIER))) June 14, 2010 When reading complex pieces for the first time, don't try to play every note. Look for the critical notes involved in the apparent harmony and try to strike those while keeping the piece moving.

Beethoven sonatas and Youtube.

It's possible now to read a Beethoven sonata as it's being playing, on Youtube. Try it. I'll post a few links here later today.
Don't move your piano by yourself.  It might look easy to move a piano, but in the case of a grand piano-- especially- you're dealing with a situation that requires knowledge of how the weight of the piano affects the legs if you push it in one direction vs. another direction. Consult a piano mover.
Tuning your piano to A=432 would be counter to what Josef Goebbels of Nazi Germany would have wanted. It was Goebbels who set the standard to A=440. Bach's standard, a few hundred years previous, was 432. Whose standard do you want? Bach's? Or the Nazi's? Ask yourself-- why would the Nazi's have set A to 440?
A piano will produce many tones at once, giving you complete control over the harmony whereas a solo instrument like a violin or saxaphone can only give you one tone at a time, negating any ability to create harmony by yourself. This is why every music student, with plans to play any instrument, should get basic piano training. Piano is a master instrument.

Piano lessons vs. music appreciation

It doesn't make any sense to take piano lessons without deciding first, as a student, what kind of music you like. A piano lesson typically preselects music for you based on various characteristics, like level of complexity, numbers of different notes and where the notes are, types of chords and so on. But even big complicated pieces of music can be reduced to a beginner's level. It behooves the student to initiate his or her own interest in what particular music he or she likes to listen to. If there is no taste evolved, as in a youngster, more often than not, then the piano lesson becomes a music appreciatiou course. That used to be the work of parents but a good piano teacher will be able to select CD's and Youtube videos for a student to listen to.

Tune your piano to A = 432 for better sound.

by Rick Potvin.

If you tune your piano to A = 432, you'll "feel" the difference even without knowing anything about music. There is something to this because there are physical demonstrations of resonance patterns created in salt on steel plates vibrating at particular frequencies that do not occur at other frequencies. What's going on with that? You have to wonder. Google A=432 and you'll see a plethora of information about this.

There's always a larger context to everything. Reductionists don't believe in larger contexts but they're part of an historical world wide oligarchical conspiracy to dumb the mass of humanity down. Either that, or they themselves are dupes. This topic too is part of my piano lessons.
